The English Game: What happened at the real Darwen FA Cup Final in 1883?

The English Game is a new period drama series on Netflix which was created by Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes. The series is based on true events and tells the story of how football came to be the most-played sport across the world. The drama is based about a pivotal moment in history – the Darwen FC Cup Final in 1883.

The English game follows two main characters, Arthur Kinnaird (played by Edward Holcroft) and Scot Fergus “Fergie” Suter (Kevin Guthrie).

The six-part series is based on true events but creator Julian Fellowes executed some creative licence to help intensify the drama.

In The English Game, one of the main characters Jimmy Love (James Harkness) ends up getting injured during a game and has to give up football ahead of the FA cup final.

But in real life Love only played for Darwen until 1879 and it is not known exactly what happened to him after this.

  • The English Game cast: Who plays Jimmy Love in The English Game?

The 1883 final was between Blackburn Olympic and Old Etonians at the Kennington Oval in south London, with Blackburn winning 2-1 after extra time.

The Blackburn goals were scored by James Costley, a forward, and Arthur Matthews, with the Old Etonians goal coming from Harry Goodhart, centre-forward.

This match is one of the most famous in history as it was the first time in an FA Cup final a working-class team had triumphed over a team playing the public school tactics.

The working-class played what is known as the combination game, which means passing the ball, using teamwork and practicing dribbling skills.

On the other hand, the public school tactics were rushing and scrimmages, which means using long kicks to get the ball down the other side of the field.

More than 8,000 people flocked to the Kennington Oval to watch the highly-anticipated final, during which Goodhart had scored the first goal by half-time.

Blackburn Olympic, who were considered to be the fitter of the two teams, found the strength to fight back in the second half with Matthews levelling the playing field.

The players were unable to score the winning goal in the allocated time so extra time had to be played, making the game much more intense for spectators.

After 17 minutes of extra time, Costley managed to get the ball past the goalkeeper, making the Blackburn team the first northern team to win the FA Cup.

The winning team wore stripes of navy blue and white, whereas the Old Etonians wore an all-white kit with black socks.

A copy of the post-match report said: “Play in the second half was evenly balanced and after twenty minutes had elapsed, a grand effort on the part of Olympic ended with Matthews putting a well-directed shot beyond the reach of Rawlinson for the equalizer.

“Dunn, the best Etonian forward, was hurt at this point and had to retire from the field — a great loss to his side.

“Olympic began to play with more confidence as a result, and the Eton goalkeeper only just stopped Costley’s fine shot in time.”

The iconic match was played on March 31.

Throughout The English Game, Fellowes explores the politics of football and the noticeable divide between classes, as well as the game tactics.

The series explains how the working-class had to fight for a chance to be involved in the sport, which would eventually become the most-played game in the world.

There are riots at the hands of the working class who will stop at nothing to make sure they have an equal chance in the sporting world.

Although the series has been adapted to heighten the drama, it gives fans a fairly accurate overview of how the rules of the game became revolutionary.

Ellie Harrison shock: The ONE thing Countryfile host is terrified of

Ellie Harrison has been a part of the Countryfile team since 2009 but the presenter, 42, chooses not to participate in social media.

Ellie revealed her views in an interview with The Radio Times in 2017.

She said: “I don’t engage with Twitter conversations because I’m frightened it will ruin my day. I prefer not to look at all.”

Later in September 2019 in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Ellie admitted that she doesn’t have any social media accounts.

Ellie said in regards to criticism she may get on social media about Countryfile: “I don’t have Twitter or Instagram and anything that’s programme specific is dealt with by the producers.

“Unless there’s anything in particular I need to be pulled up on, then I tend not to hear about it. And I choose to keep it that way.”

  • Ellie Harrison: Countryfile host admits to ‘looking diva-ish’

The Countryfile presenter has had social media in the past but felt it wasn’t good for her.

She said: “I had Twitter until Christmas then I came off everything at the same time thinking this isn’t lifting me up, this isn’t bringing anything warm or good into my life.”

Ellie, though, revealed her reason for staying off social media was not because she can’t handle the criticism.

“It wasn’t because I was getting feedback particularly because I think if you want to hear praise then you have to hear criticism too,” she said.

“You can’t cherry pick what you hear and I’ve always taken the stance that I prefer not to hear anything than try to hear good or bad.

“But if you do this job you’re essentially standing up on stage and saying, ‘Look at me, look at me’.

“You can’t then be upset or call people bullies if they don’t like you because you’ve asked them to look at you.”

She went on to say she likens her own preference to social media to that of Kanye West, who believes the sites shouldn’t include the number of followers or likes users have.

She said: “I kind of like the Kanye West stance of just saying there shouldn’t be any numbers at all.

“Not just the number of likes, but no numbers at all because then you’d be posting things for art’s sake.

“There could be one person seeing it or 100 million and if you don’t know, then you’re producing it for the right reasons rather than to grab attention.”

Simon Rimmer: ‘Shut up’ Sunday Brunch host hits back at criticism over coronavirus comment

Simon Rimmer, 56, took to Twitter earlier this week to speak out after the government issued advice for people to avoid mass gatherings at restaurants and pubs due to the spread of the coronavirus. The Sunday Brunch presenter, who owns 13 restaurants, explained takings were “down by 66 pert cent” in his businesses following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s initial speech.

Simon then explained in a separate tweet that he was concerned for his employees, adding: “I employ 400 plus people. They rely on me to pay their bills etc. Now I don’t know if I can do that for them.”

In spite of his comment, one Twitter user accused the chef of being more “worried about lining his pockets”.

The post read: “You ain’t worried about the staff, you’re worried about lining your pockets!”(sic)

Simon was quick to hit back at the tweet and slammed the social media user for being “narrow minded”.

“We have no insurance claims to protect us as it’s not an enforced closure.

“It won’t take long for us to go out of business permanently.”(sic)

The television personality then added that suggestions from fans for him to adapt and provide a delivery based business are “not that simple”.

He continued: “I know lots of you are suggesting we become a delivery based business.

Sheila Steafel: Queen of Comedy leaves £35,000 for her beloved dogs

The TV pioneer – who worked with stars including Spike Milligan, Kenny Everett and Tommy Cooper – was never without a pet dog for more than 50 years. She had been married briefly to Steptoe And Son actor Harry H Corbett but was single at the time of her death, aged 84. She left a total estate of more than £1million but outstanding debts and other financial commitments whittled the sum down to £367,000.

Her will, published earlier this month, said she wanted to leave £35,000 to help care for her two cross-breeds, Cassie and Oscar.

South African-born Sheila wanted them to be looked after by either one of her friends, Anne McPhillips or Geoffrey Cohen.

She also left £20,000 to a London charity, All Dogs Matter, and £10,000 each for the National Animal Welfare Trust, Animal Defenders’ International and the Brooke equine charity.

Her former agent Barry Langley said: “She didn’t have any children so her dogs were everything to her.

“They were like her children. “She loved them and she always made sure they were looked after.

“They cost her work once because she fell over one of them and hurt herself. She had concussion. I think she missed a part in Casualty and a big theatre production.

“She was a very generous lady, very lovely, and we all miss her.”

Sheila’s big break came in the 1960s when she appeared on ground-breaking satire The Frost Report, with David Frost.

She was the only regular female performer in sketches with John Cleese and worked alongside Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker in their first ever sketches as a double act.

She also won acclaim for her stage plays with the Royal Shakespeare Company and a role in the 1966 British sci-fi movie, Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2050 AD.

But she was best-known for her television appearances on shows including the Kenny Everett Show and Dave Allen at Large.

In later years, she also appeared in Casualty and Holby City on the BBC.

Sheila, who lived in Cricklewood, in north-west London, left £35,000 to Mr Cohen, £30,000 to Ms McPhillips, and £25,000 to another friend, Jessica Nettleton.

Her car also went to Mrs Nettleton and career memorabilia to the Victoria and Albert Museum or the University of Bristol Theatre Collection.

Mr Cohen was unavailable to comment on the will and Ms McPhillips declined.

Alex Jones: The One Show host scolded by viewers amid coronavirus pandemic

Alex Jones, 43, was joined on the sofa by co-host Patrick Kielty, 49, on Thursday’s episode of The One Show. But the pair sparked a social media frenzy after viewers complained the presenting duo should be practising social distancing following the coronavirus crisis.

It comes as Alex and Patrick introduced the show as normal, sitting quite close together on the sofa.

The UK is currently being advised to keep their distance from people and remain indoors amid the recent surge in coronavirus cases.

Alex was quick to react to viewers’ concerns as she admitted it was “hard to break habits”.

“Now we are having a lot of emails from viewers about social distancing and that we’re are quite close together,” she explained as co-star Patrick moved further away from her.

“We hear you and we’ve moved apart.”

Alex continued: “It’s just hard to break habits. That’s what it is. We’re so used to sitting together but you’re absolutely right.”

Some viewers took to social media to criticise the seating arrangements, with one user saying: “No social distancing on The One Show. Come on show some leadership. At least one metre between people, but preferably two metres.”

Another person commented: “Why are they sitting so close together? The presenters facing each other when they speak so close #TheOneShow #COVID19.”

While a third person remarked: “Someone tell Alex and Patrick to not sit so close! #TheOneShow.”

“Immediately after a government message about the Coronavirus, these two are on the sofa next to each other. Great job promoting social distancing #TheOmneShow #coronavirus,” another viewer added.

Alex and Patrick were joined on the programme by former Inbetweeners actress Emily Atack.

Meanwhile, the Welsh presenter’s regular co-host Matt Baker was a no-show on the programme.

It comes after the Countryfile presenter announced earlier this week, he was self-isolating after a family member had shown signs of the coronavirus.

However, Matt has now claimed he may have contracted COVID-19 after displaying symptoms.

Reporting via a video link to the studio, Matt was sitting with his pet dog at his home as he has been for the majority of the week.

The presenter began by explaining he had some of the symptoms linked with coronavirus, such as a dry cough.
