Ozark: How did Helen Pierce die? Stunt co-ordinator on death scene

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Ozark is a popular crime drama series on Netflix which follows the Byrde family, who flee to the Ozarks as a result of a failed money-laundering operation. They face trouble from the Navarro drug cartel, for which Helen Pierce (played by Janet McTeer) is the lawyer. Stunt co-ordinator Hiro Koda has spoken exclusively to about how her seemingly simple death scene was really executed.

How did Helen Pierce die?

Season three of Ozark landed on Netflix earlier this year and fans were shocked to see some exciting twists.

Helen Pierce was known for causing a lot of torment throughout the latest series, and she ended up being tortured by Navarro’s (Felix Solis) men.

They suspected her family might have known of her involvement in their plan, but she manages to avoid further punishment.

Helen was appearing to be the dark horse as she planned to take over Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy’s (Laura Linney) business and have them killed.

But she saw her demise in a brutal way after travelling to Mexico with the Byrde’s for a Christening.

  • Ozark season 3 final scene explained: Was Helen’s fate confirmed?

She ended up being shot dead while with Wendy and Marty, who were meeting Navarro, and fans were left in shock.

Hiro Koda said the scene may have looked like a simple death, but it actually took a lot of precision to get it exactly right.

He said: “No CGI was used in Ozark apart from some gunfire when the actors were standing close together.

“When Helen was killed at the end, that was a very challenging sequence to do. It turned out perfectly and looked amazing but we had to work out her placement.

“We had to work out how much debris and blood would come out on top of Wendy and Marty, and seeing her fall – there were no stunt doubles. It’s about precise timings.”

Her death scene in episode 10 of the third season lasted a matter of seconds, and it sees Navarro welcoming Helen and the Byrdes outside a church.

He thanks them for coming, before one of his men points a gun to her head from outside the frame, and shoots her in the head.

She falls to the ground, leaving Wendy and Marty covered in her blood, before Navarro walks up and embraces them both.

Fans were reeling at the jaw-dropping moment as they had always considered Helen to be the untouchable character.

Ozark: What photo makes Ben angry while he is teaching? [FAN DISCUSSION]

Viewers have been watching the death scene on YouTube and they continue to feel shocked when they see Helen drop dead.

One fan said: “Am I the only one who replayed this part about five times because they couldn’t believe what just happened.”

Another fan said: “That gun shot came out of nowhere, it rarely happens to me that a gun shot in a scene scared the hell out of me like this.”

As Koda said, Helen took on the scene herself and she was tasked with dropping to the ground in a way which looked as if her body was lifeless.

She would have landed on some sort of crash mat, with a separate sound indicating she had hit the ground.

  • Ozark: What happened to Wyatt Langmore’s dad Russ?

Stunt doubles have been used elsewhere throughout the series, and Koda mentioned, in particular, the shootout in the chapel in episode 10.

He said: “That was all stunt people in the room, there were 25 people and they had 10 seconds to kill each other. I have a core team of stunt doubles I work with and I continue to use them.”

Koda is an American stuntman who is talented at martial arts and motocross, and he was introduced to the stunt industry in 1986.

He is known for his work on Power Rangers and has been nominated for a number of stunt awards, having worked on more than 100 films and TV shows.

He said the whole cast and crew in Ozark had been great fun to work with, and he praised Jason Bateman for his direction.

Ozark is available to watch on Netflix now.

Why Lori Loughlin and Husband Mossimo Giannulli's Plea Agreements Are Different

Lori Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli agreed to plead guilty amid their college admission scandal charges — but their proposed prison sentences are very different.

On Thursday morning, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Loughlin, 55, agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, and Giannulli, 56, agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and honest services wire and mail fraud.

Pending a judge's approval, the Full House actress would be sentenced to two months in prison, a $150,000 fine, two years of supervised release, and 100 hours of community service.

Loughlin's husband — a fashion designer with whom she shares daughters Olivia Jade, 20, and Isabella Rose, 21 — however, would receive five months in prison, a $250,000 fine, two years of supervised release, and 250 hours of community service.

A legal source told PEOPLE the couple's differing sentences come down to different alleged roles in the scandal: "Mossimo took the more active role of the two, and the money technically came from him. Mossimo dealt with Rick Singer more frequently, and was the one who originally connected with him. Lori was a bit more passive, but she was aware of everything that Mossimo was doing."

The source also noted that the couple has separate bank accounts, "although they have comingled a lot of their assets."

When asked why they agreed to plead guilty now, a source told PEOPLE, "This was a now or never deal. It was presented as the last clear chance for them to plead before going to trial, and they knew that if they were found guilty, they were realistically looking at more than a year behind bars, probably more like three or four."

Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Sign up for PEOPLE's free True Crime newsletter for breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases.

The couple will formally plead guilty in front of a judge on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. They are the 23rd and 24th parents to plead guilty in the college admissions case.

According to the DOJ, the charge of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and honest services mail and wire fraud provides for a sentence of up 20 years in prison.

"Under the plea agreements filed today, these defendants will serve prison terms reflecting their respective roles in a conspiracy to corrupt the college admissions process and which are consistent with prior sentences in this case," U.S. attorney Andrew E. Lelling said in a statement. "We will continue to pursue accountability for undermining the integrity of college admissions."

On March 12, 2019, the U.S. attorney’s office in Massachusetts indicted Loughlin and Giannulli in the shocking nationwide scam as part of an investigation dubbed Operation Varsity Blues.

Nearly 50 other parents, coaches, exam proctors and admissions counselors were accused of actions such as paying for boosted SAT scores and lying about students’ athletic skills in order to gain them acceptance to elite colleges including Yale, Georgetown, USC and Stanford.

Loughlin and Giannulli allegedly paid $500,000 to Rick Singer — the man at the center of the scandal and the founder and CEO of the company The Key: A Private Life Coaching and Counseling Company — to falsely designate their daughters as recruits to the USC crew team, though neither actually participated in the sport.

Marriage is only about a new dress says Maureen Lipman

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Maureen, 74, who lost her husband of 30 years to cancer in 2004, met her new partner 13 years ago but says she sees no point in getting wed. The mother of two, who still lives alone, believes the only reason young women get married these days is “for the dress”. She said: “It’s quite easy to be a single independent woman in this day and age and have loads of male friends and a partner you’re not married to. There are no obstacles to that.

“So I’m not quite sure of the purpose of marriage for me. I don’t need anyone’s money, or their house. What would be the point?

“Marriage is basically a religious commitment and always was. I never quite understand why people even want to get married these days – I suspect it’s mostly about the dress…”

The Coronation Street star, who lives in Paddington, west London, while her partner, retired Italian businessman Guido Castro, lives in Gerrards Cross, Bucks, admits her forthright opinions can get her into trouble.

She says she’s abiding by lockdown despite being “anti-authoritarian” and has been banned from social media by her children “in case I get beheaded by someone”.

Maureen laughs at the current predicament of those women who have been dying their hair to cover up the grey, while she embraced that years ago.

She said: “Staying grey has been a real freedom from tyranny. I embraced it and I love it – it’s the best thing I ever did. Otherwise I’d be dabbing stuff on my hair now and coming out magenta with a pink scalp.”

Despite being in the “vulnerable” category due to her age, Maureen is desperate to get out and start contributing to society as she’s convinced she’s already had a form of coronavirus.

She added: “I believe myself to have had a mild form of coronavirus masquerading as a fortnight’s persistent cough, with attached fatigue and sweats.

“If I did have it, then I flung my viral breath cheerfully around the Coronation Street corner shop at anyone who popped in for a bag of crisps and a confrontation. Who knew?

“I am pondering how, if I could get my antibodies tested, I could be more useful in society. As right now I really don’t know how to contribute.”

Before meeting Guido, Maureen said she got over the death of 72-year-old screenwriter husband Jack Rosenthal, who worked on Corrie, by watching episodes of American comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm.

She said: “After Jack died I watched two Larry David shows a day with my children, Amy and Adam, and we just laughed ourselves out of our misery.”

The Last Kingdom cast: Who is Thea Sofie Loch Naess?

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

The Last Kingdom is a popular historical drama series on Netflix and it is based on the novels called The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. The series follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon), who was born a Saxon but was raised by Danes, and his allegiance is torn between the two sides. One of the characters from the previous series is Skade, played by Thea Sofie Loch Naess, and here is everything you need to know about the actress.

Who is Thea Sofie Loch Naess?

Thea Sofie Loch Naess is a Norwegian actress who was raised in Oslo, and she started acting when she was just eight years old.

She took on a lead role in the coming-of-age film titled One Night in Oslo back in 2014, and she was studying drama that same year.

Her roles fit into a similar theme, as she has played Thea in Dryads, Christina of Norway in The Last King, and finally the villain Skade in The Last Kingdom in 2018.

The young star, 23, only starred in the third series of The Last Kingdom, but she quickly became one of the most popular characters.

The actress is on Instagram and she has been sharing updates on life during quarantine, and she even paid tribute to the cast of The Last Kingdom on the release date of season four.

She posted a photo of herself dressed as Skade, saying: “Waving hello to all my friends in season 4 of @thelastkingdom. I think you should go ahead and watch because they are all amazing.”

  • The Last Kingdom: Who is Ruby Hartley? Meet the star behind Stiorra

Fans were quick to respond to the post, telling her how much they will miss her character in the new series.

One fan said: “I’m already missing Skade, you can throw a curse my way and I’m good with it.”

Another fan said: “You were brilliant in it, is there not a witch to bring you back?”.

Skade was one of the main characters in season three and she also features in The Saxon Stories novels, and she was a major antagonist.

She had special powers as a Seer, and would seal terrible fates for her enemies, proving to be an evil character in the series.

Skade had the ability to manipulate even the most headstrong of men, including Uhtred, who ‘stole’ her from Bloodhair (Ola Rapace).

The relentless character is not afraid to inflict violence on those who get in her way, and she is a threat to others with her ability to see the future.

She predicted the impending death of King Alfred (David Dawson) and inflicted a curse on Uhtred, which causes his lover Gisela (Peri Baumeister) to die in childbirth.

Fans were disappointed to see her powerful character leave the series, as she was killed by Uhtred at the end of the third series in order to break the curse.

She suffered a terrible fate as Uhtred pretended to bathe with her in the river, acting like he was about to seduce her.

Instead, he put his hands around her neck and strangled her, drowning her in the river after he found out it was the only way to break the curse.

The Last Kingdom season 5: Will Uhtred claim back Bebbanburg? [INSIGHT]

The young star is still in love with her character even though she is no longer in the series, and regularly posts photos of herself in costume.

She was known for her bright blonde hair and her iconic facial tattoos, making her stand out from the other characters.

She called Skade her “alter ego” and posted a photo of herself in costume, with her hand covered in blood, as Skade was known to violently kill her enemies.

Fans were hoping the producers would find a way to incorporate her back into the series, whether it be through visions or flashbacks.

However, she is not mentioned and does not appear in any form in the fourth season, leaving viewers feeling disappointed.

  • The Last Kingdom season 5: Will Brida become the enemy in new series?

Introducing herself to the series back in 2018 she said in a Twitter video: “I am really excited and I hope you enjoy this season as much as I enjoyed shooting it.

“I’m really happy to be a part of this great show with all these great people.” Fans called her character “scary” but they were in awe of her power.

The young actress does not appear to have any projects in the pipeline at the moment, so fans will have to keep an eye out for her next big role.

She featured on the cover of Elle magazine in Norway back in January and fans were reminded of how much they adored her unique character.

One fan said on Instagram: “Still wish you were part of the show. You were the best new character, you played the hell out of that role.”

The Last Kingdom is available to watch on Netflix now.

Big Bang Theory: Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler ‘reunited’ in new TV project

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

The Big Bang Theory fans were extremely sad to see the CBS comedy come to an end last year. After 12 incredible seasons full of entertainment, viewers saw each of the characters come to the natural conclusion of their stories. However it looks like two of the huge stars will be arriving on TV once again.

Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons) finished the show with his best scenario available – a Nobel Prize.

Similarly, his wife, Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) found herself at the top of her game in the scientific world.

Now, the next arrival of Amy star Mayim on screen is in the upcoming TV show titled Call Me Kat.

Call Me Kat is to be based on the UK show Miranda – which was created by Miranda Hart.

  • Big Bang Theory quiz questions and answers: 15 questions and answers

The upcoming FOX show is going to follow a 39-year-old woman – Kat, played by Mayim – who will be battling to prove to her mother that she cannot have everything she wants, but will still be happy.

Filming for Call Me Kat started earlier this year, according to The Sun, but has since been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Sheldon star Jim comes onto the scene as an executive producer on the show, bringing the actors together off-screen.

However, as Jim is such a renowned actor, he may find himself feeling the urge to join his former-on-screen-wife on set once again in show as things progress.

Meanwhile, fans have been looking into some plot holes over the course of the series, and pointed out one involving Sheldon and Amy.

Speaking out about an issue involving Sheldon and a scarf, a fan wrote: “Sheldon is returning Amy’s scarf and says, ‘You wore it the night we went ice skating, remember?’

“To which Amy replies, ‘You mean the night that I went ice skating and you stood at the rail Googling the symptoms of hypothermia?’”

However they went on to point out Amy later explained she would never go ice skating.

NCIS season 18 theories: Fans predict major SEAL Team crossover [INFO]

They continued: “But in episode 8-12: The Space Probe Disintegration, Amy states that she cannot go ice skating because she has ‘unnaturally brittle ankles.’”

Of course this is a huge error, and could be a result of a couple of things.

Either this is a massive misstep for the writers, and Amy’s character simply forgot about ice skating.

Or, alternatively, could Amy have developed this condition between the two episodes in question?

  • Big Bang Theory plot hole: Sheldon’s historical knowledge error outed

This could quite easily be the case for Amy, as she has found a number of new ailments over her course on the show.

Despite this, could her illness have simply deteriorated over time, or should she have not gone on the ice skating date to begin with?

Fans also went on to spot a number of errors in the show concerning the rest of the cast as well.

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Netflix.

Phillip Schofield: Has Phil Schofield moved out? This Morning host addresses speculation

Phillip Schofield, 58 was reported to have moved into a central London flat last month. The reports come two months after Phillip came out as gay on This Morning alongside co-presenter and friend Holly Willoughby.

When Phillip opened up about his sexuality on the show, he said: “This is something that has caused many heartbreaking conversations at home.

“I have been married to Steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown-up daughters, Molly and Ruby.

“My family have held me so close: they have tried to cheer me up, to smother me with kindness and love, despite their own confusion.

“Yet still I can’t sleep and there have been some very dark moments.

“My inner conflict contrasts with an outside world that has changed so very much for the better.

“Today, quite rightly, being gay is a reason to celebrate and be proud. Yes, I am feeling pain and confusion, but that comes only from the hurt that I am causing my family.”

Fueling speculation a source told the Mail On Sunday: “There has been talk for weeks that Phillip isn’t living with Steph any more, that he had moved out for good and had a new home.

“He has a place in central London. It’s not as big but it’s the beginning of a new life for him.”

However, Phillip has since denied he has moved out of his marital home with the presenter posting over the weekend a snap with his family as they had a murder mystery themed dinner.

One follower angrily commented: “So you moved out but you’re allowed to visit your family?

“But I can’t go and visit my children and grandchildren. Just the rich or famous that are allowed, good to know. [angry face emoji].”

But in response, Phillip quizzed the fan about the suggestion he had moved out of his family home, suggesting he was still living there.

In a post to his Instagram story, Phillip posted his wife Stephanie’s attempt at cutting his hair.

Phillip seemed to be pleased with the results as after the trim was over, Phillip said: “That is a quality, quarantine cut, nicely done, very good.”

He went on to say: “How much do I owe ya?”

Stephanie and Phil are reported to have met while both working at the BBC.

They went onto marry in 1993 and have two daughters together Molly, 27 and Ruby 24.

Amid Phillip coming out a source told the Sunday Mirror the couple are in no rush to divorce.

The source told the publication: “Steph isn’t bitter over Phil’s coming out.

“She isn’t the type to be spiteful by dragging him into court.

“She’s saying she’ll stick with him until he’s settled and happy in a new relationship, and then they’ll talk about an amicable split deal.”
