Council engineer gets his van CRUSHED by hydraulic road bridge

That parking spot’s a tight squeeze! Council engineer gets his van CRUSHED by hydraulic road bridge when it lifts open

  • An engineer parked his van well beyond a safety bridge barrier on Wednesday
  • As a result, when the mechanical hinge of the bridge opened it crushed the van
  • The hinge of the bascule bridge was opening up to let a boat sail through below
  • The incident happened on Wednesday along part of Poole Harbour in Dorset

A hapless council worker was ‘in for a rollicking’ after parking his van too close to a lifting bridge which crushed it when it opened.

The hydraulic road bridge that spans part of Poole Harbour in Dorset is currently closed to traffic for maintenance works.

The unnamed engineer working on the structure parked the Fiat Talento well beyond the red and white safety barrier thinking it was safe to do.

A council worker saw his van crushed in unusual fashion by a hydraulic road bridge in Dorset

The incident happened when he left it too close to the mechanical hinge of the bascule bridge

But he left it too close to the mechanical hinge of the bascule bridge which lifted up to let a passing boat through.

At that moment the hulking steel counterweight on one arm of the bridge swung down on top of the Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council van and squashed it.

Luckily the workman was not in the vehicle at the time and was not injured.

But he was overheard by witnesses telling a colleague that he would be in big trouble.

Lee Hebditch, a transport manager at Poole Docks, saw the aftermath of the incident that happened on Wednesday.

Lee, 48, said: ‘I was cycling home for lunch I saw the lifting bridge was in the up position.

‘As I got closer I could see the white council van parked the other side of the safety barrier.

‘The bridge has this solid grid work that acts as a counterweight and that had completely crushed the van.

‘I saw a guy who I think was the unlucky workman because I overheard him say he was going to get a good rollicking from his boss. He looked a bit embarrassed about it.

‘I think he must have thought that because the bridge was closed to cars he could park well beyond where the safety barrier is and either forgot the bridge was going to open or just parked too close to it.’

The bascule bridge was opening up to let boats sail through below along the Poole Harbour

Gary Powell, head of engineering at BCP Council, said: ‘One of our maintenance vans has been severely damaged at Poole lifting bridge.

‘The bridge is currently closed for scheduled maintenance works and no one has been injured in this incident.

‘The vehicle was recovered and we are moving quickly to assess any possible damage to the bridge.’

Woman gets entire building to sing happy birthday for fiancé's 30th birthday

Lockdown birthdays require a lot of creativity.

One woman who wanted to surprise her fiancé for the big 30 wanted to make it extra special while under quarantine.

Hannah Chung, a photographer from LA, set about orchestrating an epic plan for partner of five years Jason Shields, a videographer.

She told Jason that they’d be going out for some sun and while heading out, asked him to open the window in their building hallway.

A slightly confused Jason was met with a chorus of ‘happy birthday’ from 76 different families in his apartment complex.

The couple had moved into a new property a few days before quarantine and have yet to meet their neighbours.

So the task of getting everyone to agree with Hannah’s plan was no easy feat.

The determined bride-to-be ended up hand-writing 76 invites to be slid under the door of everyone in the building.

Hannah left a date and time for everyone to wait by their windows for her countdown.

All of them abided for one lovely, wholesome happy birthday count.

The pair got engaged in December and were due to marry this year but then, as for many of us, coronavirus changed their plans.

Hannah, who shared a video of the sweet tribute on TikTok, tells us how she arranged the whole thing.

She says: ‘Jason’s birthday was the big 3-0 and being under lockdown, I really couldn’t do much for him.

‘We couldn’t see anyone, we couldn’t go anywhere, and I didn’t have any baking ingredients, so I couldn’t even bake a cake!

‘The day before his birthday, he was busy working on a crazy project, so he was super tuned into that. I got out my box of crafts and told him I was making him a birthday card, so he never even turned around.’

The couple lives in a historical building where the inner units face an open atrium.

Hannah wrote 76 invitations to all the interior-facing neighbours, inviting them to celebrate Jason’s 30th birthday with her.

She added: ‘I included my number to have everyone RSVP. I told them all that I would count down from 3 at 2:30, and to send me any videos they take of the event.

‘In order for me to send out the invitations, I lied and told Jason I was going to run the stairs for exercise. This is something that we actually have been doing within our building because our community gym has been closed due to social distancing.

‘That night, the RSVP texts started pouring in, and it was actually a fantastic way to meet all of our neighbours.’

The next day at 2pm, Hannah started noticing everyone opening their windows.

‘At 2:29, I said let’s go to the roof to get some sun for his birthday. We grabbed a couple of drinks, left our apartment, and walked past the hallway windows.

‘I told him to open one. He said, “why?” and I said that I had a surprise for him. It was 2:30. I stuck my head out, saw everyone else doing the same, and started counting down from three!

‘And it was crazy how many people participated. There were a lot more attendees than I expected, certainly more than the number of people who actually RSVPd!

‘Everyone knew his name from the invite, so there was no pause during the song, and it was loud!’

Their new neighbours were such good sports and one even waved a ‘happy birthday’ banner.

‘It was all very sweet how everyone came together to celebrate a stranger’s birthday during a time of isolation.

‘Jason was super surprised, totally impressed, and incredibly touched by all the support.’

Anna Duggar Gets Deposed in Evil Husband’s Real Estate Lawsuit

This is an evergreen sentence, but it must be wriitten again:

Poor Anna Duggar.

The long-suffering wife of Josh Duggar has been forced to remain by her awful husband’s side throughout numerous personal ordeals that have placed a strain on her sanity and her marriage.

And now?

As confirmed by multiple outlets?

She had to also remain by Josh’s side throughout an ongoing legal ordeal.

Which is sort of just beginning.

As you may have read about recently, Josh Duggar’s company has been sued.

About a year ago, in April of 2019, a man named Carl Echols claimed his cousin sold him a five-acre property in 2006 in Arkansas for $17,500.

A decade later, he has alleged that Josh purchased the same property (behind Carl’s back) for a mere $1,000.

Echols has written in court documents that he’s been paying taxes on the property in question for nearly 10 years.

He has therefore sued Duggar’s company for quiet title, accusing his cousin of fraud and breach of contract.

It’s a confusing situation, but it boils down to Josh Duggar once again maybe doing something unseemly.

Which really shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point, but still. Here we are.

Arkansas court papers, meanwhile, now reveal that Anna was deposed on Wednesday, March 25, meaning she had to talk to lawyers on official record about all she knows in regard to her husband’s alleged actions.

We can’t say for certain right now exactly to what Anna testified.

To be clear, Josh has been dropped as a defendant from the case, although his company, ALB Investments, LLC, is still being sued.

The actual case is scheduled to begin in April, at which time we’ll know more about Josh’s supposed role in this scheme and whether he’ll be held liable in anyway.

We’ll also know then whether Anna will be called to testify as a witness.

Also to be clear: Duggar was at the center of another potential scandal involving his car dealership in Arkansas last year.

Homeland Security agents actually searched his business as part of an ongoing federal investigation, but details of the raid and what was being investigated have yet to be released.

It remains another black mark on Josh’s record, however.

At this point, it’s almost impossible to keep track of all this guy has done and/or been accused of doing.

In May of 2015, Josh confessed to molesting five minor females in his parents’ home as a teenager between 2002 and 2003; two of them were sisters Jill and Jessa.

Just a few months later, Josh confessed to being a client of the website Ashley Madison, admitting to cheating on his wife on multiple occasions and begging for forgiveness.

He then checked into a Christian rehab center and the couple went to marriage counseling.

In November, Anna Duggar gave birth to her and Josh’s sixth child.

“It was definitely a hard thing and it is such a betrayal for a spouse to go through what we’re rocking through,” Anna said in 2015, adding of her husband and evreything surrounding him:

“It was hard to realize it was such a public thing…

“That loyalty was broken. How could this happen in our marriage? Josh was my first love. He’s my one and only. My only hope was to cling to my faith.”

That may sound sweet or inspiring to some, but Josh is also a one and only kind of dirtbag. Let’s all never forget that.

  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

A medical director has been given a parking ticket while helping in the battle against COVID-19.

Dr Mehdi Veisi was shocked to finish work to find a fine notice placed on the windscreen of his car – right next to his NHS emergency badge.

The medical director for Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust took his complaint to Twitter where he told others he doesn’t have the time to fight the ticket and so will have to pay.

The medical director for Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust took his complaint to Twitter

In a sarcastic message to the Haringey Council he said: ‘Thank you Haringey Council for giving me a ticket whilst I’m fighting COVID-19.

‘You could see my NHS emergency badge too. Nicely done. Instead of saving patients, now I need to appeal a ticket. Get your priorities right for NHS staff.’

The tweet was met with outrage from the doctor’s followers.

One said: ‘Absolutely disgusting, please appeal against this unfair ticket.

‘Thank you to you and your hospital for everything you are doing and please keep safe but council officials acted quickly a quashed the fine.’

Other generous users even offered to pay the fine on his behalf. But within hours the council officials quashed the fine.

A spokesperson for Haringey Council said: ‘We contacted the doctor soon after he received the fine and have now cancelled it.

‘We want to thank him, and all of the UK’s fantastic NHS workers, for the brave work they are doing in tackling COVID-19.’

Tekashi 69 gets sued by Fashion Nova for hiding his criminal dealings

Tekashi 69 gets sued by Fashion Nova for hiding his criminal dealings from them before going to jail

While Tekashi 69 awaits his August 2020 release from prison, he’s facing a new lawsuit from Fashion Nova.

The 23-year-old rapper (real name Daniel Hernandez) is being sued by the discount clothing retailer for $2.25 million, according to documents obtained by TMZ.

The fashion brand had signed a deal with the rapper for a series of promotions on his social media pages, but that happened just weeks before he was sent to prison.

Lawsuit: While Tekashi 69 awaits his August 2020 release from prison, he’s facing a new lawsuit from Fashion Nova

After he was locked up, Tekashi was unable to perform the duties set forth in his deal, and the company claims his testimony during the trial destroyed his ability to become a good ‘brand ambassador.’

Hernandez was paid a $225,000 advance for his services in October 2018, but after his arrest, he promised to return the advance and never did.

The fashion brand is claiming Tekashi concealed his entire criminal prosecution from them, and now they’re suing for $2.25 million.

Back in February 2019, the rapper plead guilty to nine charges included to conspiracy to murder and armed robbery, and he was facing up to 47 years in prison.

He sent a personal letter to the judge using his given name, asking for a second chance, and it seemed to have worked.

The Gummo rapper was sentenced to 24 months, with 13 months credit for time served, with 11 months left that would have lead to his release in November 2020.

The New York Bureau of Prisons gives inmates 54 days off a sentence per year if they exhibit good behavior.

The rapper’s lawyer, Lance Lazzaro, told TMZ in December that he believes his client will be released in August 2020.

The judge said that he had cooperated remarkably, but his conduct was too violent to let him off with just time already served, leading to the two-year sentence.

Hernandez has been no stranger to legal issues, having plead guilty in 2015 to a felony count of use of a child in a sexual performance.

He was also arrested on weapons, racketeering and drug charges in 2018.

He first came into prominence with his 2017 single Gummo, which was certified platinum and lead to his mixtape Day 69 and his album Dummy Boy in 2018.

Aaron Carter gets new face tattoo dedicated to girlfriend Melanie Martin

Aaron Carter has added another piece of art to his growing face tattoo collection.

The singer, 32, recently got inked with his girlfriend Melanie Martin’s first name above his right eyebrow. Carter showed off the new design this week while getting his hair colored by hairstylist Brandon Peach, who posted a close-up look at the tattoo.

Carter became Instagram-official with Martin in January and has since posted many loving photos with her. “This relationship will NOT be derailed all aboard choo choo,” he captioned a recent selfie of them. The day after Valentine’s Day, he posted a photo of the pair kissing with a lengthy caption, revealing that Martin had moved into his home.

He also hinted that another face tattoo — the word “love” underneath his eye — was inspired by their relationship.

Besides the word “love” and Melanie’s name, the troubled star has tattoos of three crescent moons on his cheekbone. On the other side of his face, Carter has a huge tattoo of a Medusa face that spans from his hairline to his jaw, which he debuted in September at the height of drama with his brother Nick Carter and other family members.

At the time, the artist responsible for the massive tattoo, Herchell Carrasco, told TMZ that Carter actually wanted to cover his entire face in tattoos, but Carrasco declined the request.

“Before I tattoo anyone, I take into consideration their mental state,” Carrasco said about his experience tattooing Carter’s Medusa design in the singer’s home. “In Aaron’s case, I assessed the situation and I genuinely felt he was in a good place mentally to get tattooed.”

“[Carter] wanted to keep going and I had to stop him,” Carrasco added. “I couldn’t cover his whole face in a tattoo. I just couldn’t.”

ANDREW PIERCE: Patel gets overwhelming support from Conservative Voice

ANDREW PIERCE: Priti Patel gets overwhelming support from Thatcherite Conservative Voice group amid bullying allegations

Following a flurry of accusations of bullying, Home Secretary Priti Patel was defended last week in a statement by 100 allies, including election guru Sir Lynton Crosby and William Shawcross, former chief of the Charity Commission.

Patel faces a Cabinet Office investigation into the allegations (which she denies) after Sir Philip Rutnam, the Home Office’s most senior civil servant, quit last month and vowed to sue the Government for constructive dismissal.

But while her critics continue to simmer with rage, I can reveal that she’s set to receive another impassioned cry of support — this time from Conservative Voice, a group which was set up to campaign for Thatcherite values.

Patel (pictured) faces a Cabinet Office investigation into the allegations (which she denies) after Sir Philip Rutnam, the Home Office’s most senior civil servant, quit last month and vowed to sue the Government for constructive dismissal

It follows a recent survey of 875 Conservative Voice members, in which an overwhelming 96 per cent backed her.

It was a ringing endorsement, and some of the replies to the survey, which has been sent to Boris Johnson, don’t hold back.

One member wrote: ‘Priti Patel is the only Home Secretary in recent years who is in tune with what the people want. Because of this, she is being harassed by an out of control Civil Service.’

Another said: ‘Boris must support her. It would look incredibly weak to allow her to be bullied out of office.’

But my favourite has to be: ‘We didn’t leave the EU to be governed by our own unelected technocrats.

‘This is especially true in the Home Office which is not fit for purpose.’

Over to you, PM.

Theresa May revealed her favourite character: Elizabeth Bennet, heroine of Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice

Did May’s Pride come before a fall?

At a literature festival in her Maidenhead constituency, Theresa May revealed her favourite character: Elizabeth Bennet, heroine of Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice.

Mrs May said: ‘Elizabeth is a feisty young woman able to match Mr Darcy linguistically and stand her own ground.’

If only Mrs May had followed suit and stood ‘her own ground’ when she was leading Brexit negotiations, she might still be Prime Minister…

Labour MP Charlotte Nichols recently received an unexpected missive in her Commons pigeon hole: a letter addressed to Cardinal Nichols at Westminster Cathedral.

The Warrington North MP said: ‘While I’m very flattered this turned up in my post, I can confirm that I’m not Cardinal Nichols.’

With the mess Labour is in, the party could certainly use some divine intervention.

Labour MP Charlotte Nichols recently received an unexpected missive in her Commons pigeon hole: a letter addressed to Cardinal Nichols at Westminster Cathedral

Times are so tough in the Labour-controlled London borough of Brent that the council is dimming street lights at night to save money.

Still, things can’t be all that bad. After agreeing spending cuts of £7.4 million, councillors rewarded themselves with a two per cent rise in their allowances.

The Trades Union Congress has issued a four-point plan for coping with the coronavirus outbreak, one of which states: ‘Join your union so you and your workmates can collectively bargain for full sick pay.’

Talk about cashing in . . .

It seems Sir Keir Starmer has a new ally in his camp to win over voters in the Labour leadership election next month.

He has just won the backing of Vicar of Dibley star, comedian Dawn French — but not because of his policies.

‘This is the chap for me,’ she tweets.

‘Dignified and experienced. Heart in right place. Capable. Good hair.’

Quote of the week

Tory Ben Houchen, whose election as the Tees Valley mayor in 2017 was a precursor to the crumbling of the Red Wall in the North at the recent election, tells The Spectator: ‘I’ve told Boris and No 10 there is nowhere left to hide. It’s a strong Tory government, loads of Tory MPs in the region, so there’s no one left to blame. We either deliver something different in the next four years or people will go back to voting for other parties.’

Boris would do well to take note.

Queen gets shut out of Windsor Castle in awkward security gaffe – The Sun

THE Queen was locked out of her home at Windsor Castle in an embarrassing security blunder.

Her Majesty was not amused as she was pictured stuck outside with her close protection officers.

The 93-year-old monarch was driving a Range Rover onto the estate on Thursday.

But when she reached Nelson’s Gate entrance to Windsor Castle, the gates would not open.

A frustrated protection officer appeared to kick a side door in desperation before escorting the Queen around the block until the gate was unlocked.

An onlooker said: “It’s hugely embarrassing."

"There should have been a guard opening the gates automatically when the Queen came round the corner."

“Someone either forgot to open them and there was no gatekeeper."

“They waited then went for a spin until they finally opened and did a u-turn.”

Earlier this week, The Queen was said to be 'very sad' by the news Meghan Markle may not bring baby Archie to the UK with her during their visit.

Although baby Archie has not joined the couple, a beaming Meghan Markle said it was "very nice to be back" after returning to Britain for the first time since Megxit.

Netflix stock gets bump, coronavirus concerns seen as good for service

Netflix stock RISES despite global economic recession fears after suggestions people quarantined amid coronavirus concerns will use the streaming service to pass the time

  • The price of Netflix stock rose .08 per cent this week as coronavirus concerns wiped nearly $3 trillion off the combined market value of S&P 500 companies
  • Netflix could see a short-term benefit, since people who are quarantined, or workers staying home to avoid infection, will need to watch something
  • Facebook, Amazon, Peloton and Slack  also may see an uptick as people waiting out the outbreak rely on more heavily on the internet
  • The outbreak already has mobile gamers busy in China, as the gaming industry there reports a spike in usage levels of the most popular games

Netflix stock actually got a bump this week as the rest of the world’s markets were taking a dive over coronavirus concerns.

The price of Netflix stock rose .08 per cent over the past five days, as analysts say they see the virus delivering a short-term benefit to streaming services.

Their reasoning is that people who are forced into quarantine, or workers who stay home to avoid infection, will need to watch something to pass the time.

The price of Netflix stock rose .08 per cent this week as markets took a plunge over coronavirus concerns

Analysts say that coronavirus concerns may benefit streaming services like Netflix, because people who are quarantined, or who stay home to work to avoid infection, will likely need something to watch to pass the time

‘Netflix is an obvious beneficiary if consumers stay home due to coronavirus (COVID-19 virus) concerns, and this has been reflected in considerable stock price outperformance this week,’ BMO Capital Market analyst Dan Salmon wrote in a research note,  reports Variety.

The stock’s rise comes as Netflix unveiled a specially designed row of its top ten, most popular series in the US, which users can use to pick their programming, in addition to its overall ‘top ten list.’

Netflix features popular programs like,  ‘Stranger Things 3,’ ‘The Witcher’ and ‘The Umbrella Academy.’

The popular Netflix show ‘Stranger Things’, now in its third season, may provide some viewing entertainment for people quarantined or staying home to work because of the coronavirus

The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill is among the more popular shows on Netflix, which could end up with more viewers from the coronavirus keeping more people at home waiting for the outbreak to run its course

‘The Crown’ was one of the most popular shows last year on Netflix, which is expected to have a short-term benefit from coronavirus concerns

Other companies that may see an uptick from people relying more heavily on the internet while they wait out the worst of the outbreak include Facebook, Amazon, Peloton and Slack, says MKM Partners analyst JC O’Hara.

‘We tried to identify what products/services/companies would potentially benefit in a world of quarantined individuals,’ O’Hara wrote in a note Thursday, per CNBC. ‘What would people do if stuck inside all day?’

The outbreak also has mobile gamers busy in China, as the gaming industry there reports a spike in usage levels of the most popular games.
