Boy Meets World’s Trina McGee reveals it was Will Friedle who made ‘racist comments’ – but he apologized 22 years ago – The Sun

BOY Meet's World's Trina McGee has revealed that it was Will Friedle who made "racist comments" towards her on the show.

The 50-year-old actress reassured fans that he apologized to her for the remarks 22 years ago, and also wrote her a three-page letter this week after her tweets about the experience went viral.

Trina added that she'd apologized to her former co-star, 43, for publicly calling him out on social media.

Taking to Instagram, the actress shared a photo her and Will embracing on the set of the '90s ABC series.

She captioned the post: "FOR THE RECORD: WILL FRIEDLE the man responsible for AuntJemmagate, apologized to me 22 years ago and again days ago in a in a three-page letter.

"We talked more on it and he acknowledged that he really wasn’t educated enough in his early twenties to know he was truly offending me. THIS SHOULD AND COULD BE A TEACHING MOMENT FOR ALL. For all people of all races or different backgrounds.

"He has conveyed to me how much this has changed his perception of comedy. And humanity."

Trina went on to insist that she did not view the experience as "extreme racism", adding: "I believe extreme racism is when my grandfather had to leave South Carolina in the middle of the night because the clerk had given him the wrong change and he pointed this out to the white store owner and was threatened with lynching.

"Scuddie McGee left South Carolina that night for fear of his life. Bringing his small family along with him to New Jersey.

"I’m not backing down on the truth. It stands. Will apologized to me and I forgave him, I then apologized to him for making the statements public because his joke came out of just not knowing, not viciousness and he forgave me. That’s what friends do.

"Now get back to washing your hands and surviving this pandemic and let love and hope be the next pandemic."

Trina ended her caption with one of Will's Boy Meets World character Eric's most iconic quotes: "Lose one friend. Lose all friends. Lose yourself."

Proving that there was no bad blood, Will liked the post and added the comment: "I love you, Trina".

Earlier this week, the popular sitcom faced backlash when tweets that Trina posted in January about her experience on set resurfaced.

At the time, she wrote: "Called aunt Jemima on set during hair and make up. Called a bitter bitch when I quietly waited for my scene to finish rehearsing that was being f’ed up over and over due to episode featuring my character.

"Told 'it was nice of you to join us' like a stranger after 60 episodes."

Aunt Jemima is a brand of pancake mix, syrup, and other breakfast foods but the name came from a character in minstrel shows, making it an offensive embodiment of racist stereotypes and attitudes.

She continued: "Said happy hellos to be greeted with blank cold stares. Dissed for believing in God in front of extras. F**Kery was real.

"All truth. stayed nice. Not mad. Just feeling free to comment on 20 plus years of disrespectful behavior."

When later asked what project she was referencing, she said: "Boy Meets World."

Replying to another fan, she added: "At times the tension of the disrespect was extremely stressful.

Interestingly, she noted that the remarks came from three of the stars from the core seven-strong cast, continuing: "25 years old at the time, raising a family and did not deserve to be thinking about this."

"None of those three colleagues had children. Just cowardly egos and hot diarrhoea mouths."

Boy Meets World ran from 1993 to 2000 and followed the life of Cory Matthews, played by Ben Savage.

Trina joined the series in 1997, playing teenager Angela at the age of 27; her character was a love interest for 17-year-old Rider Strong, who had played Cory's best friend Shawn Hunter since the series began.

Other original cast members include Will as Cory's brother Eric and Danielle Fishel as Topanga Lawrence, with the young cast famously growing up on the show.

In addition to Trina, Maitland Ward and Mrs. Doubtfire star Matthew Lawrence joined ther series in the later years as Rachel and Jack.

Most characters – including Trina – recently reprised their roles in Disney spin-off series Girl Meets World, which followed the life of Cory and Topanga's daughter Riley.

Penguin 'meets' belugas at aquarium closed due to coronavirus

Having a whale of a time! Penguin ‘meets’ belugas as it waddles around empty aquarium closed due to the coronavirus outbreak

  • Clip was filmed at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, which is currently closed
  • The inquisitive penguin, called Wellington, is one of the oldest at the attraction
  • He made new friends in beluga whales called Kayavak, Mauyak and baby Annik
  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

An adorable penguin was caught on camera checking in on its neighbours at an empty aquarium during the coronavirus lockdown.

The footage was recorded at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, which currently remains closed due to the outbreak.

The inquisitive rockhopper penguin called Wellington, who is one of the oldest at the attraction, was allowed to roam around the other exhibits before stopping to greet a pod of beluga whales.

In the footage, Wellington can be seen waddling in front of the pane of glass as his feet gently tap along the floor.

One of the beluga whales swims straight past him before turning back around to get a closer look.

The pair pause briefly and glance inquisitively at each other.

The beluga presses its head up against the window as Wellington lets out a small squawk before the other two whales in the exhibit pop into view to greet the visitor.

One of the zookeepers behind the camera, who was supervising Wellington at all times, says ‘who’s that?’ as she encourages the interaction.

The penguin continues to jolt his head from side-to-side while he inspects his new friends.

He shuffles back and forth once again and is closely followed by one of the curious belugas.

He made friends with a pod of beluga whales called Kayavak, Mauyak and baby Annik but it is unlikely that beluga whales, from the northern hemisphere, and rockhopper penguins, found in the south pole, would ever meet in the wild

Shedd Aquarium originally posted the video on Twitter alongside the caption: ‘Wellington, meet the belugas!

‘This weekend, Wellington visited Kayavak, Mauyak and baby Annik, who were very curious about this little rockhopper.

‘Belugas are northern hemisphere animals, so they would likely never see a penguin [who live at the south pole]!’

And Wellington is not the first penguin to be allowed to roam around with the attraction previously telling the Chicago Tribune: ‘Without guests in the building, caretakers are getting creative in how they provide enrichment to animals.

‘Introducing new experiences, activities, foods and more to keep them active, encourage them to explore, problem-solve and express natural behaviours.’

  • The 6ft 6in heavyweight boxer towered over the 5ft 4in Queen while meeting

He is used to being king of the ring, but today boxer Anthony Joshua came face-to-face with real life royalty when he met the Queen at Westminster Abbey.

The British world champion, 30, was introduced to the Queen, 90, following the Commonwealth Day Service in London this afternoon.

At one point he bent down to move his head closer to the monarch’s, as if to better hear what she was saying.

Joshua, dapper in a suit and tie, was also introduced to the Duchess of Sussex, 38, who looked stunning in an emerald green ensemble by Emilia Wickstead.

He also shook hands with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his pregnant fiancee, Carrie Symonds.

Prince William avoided shaking hands, apparently due to fears over the spread of coronavirus, and quipped to Joshua: ‘I feel you’d crush mine.’

The engagement marked the last official outing for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex before they give up their royal titles at the end of March as part of their ‘Megxit’ departure agreement.

The couple  joined the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Westminster Abbey for the outing.

But, unlike last year, Harry and Meghan were conducted to their seats, rather than waiting for the Queen’s arrival and walking through the church in London with the monarch and key royals as they did last year.

It also emerged today that last-minute changes were made to the royal arrangements, meaning Prince William and Kate, who were due to join the Queen in the procession, were also conducted to their places.

The two couples exchanged a few brief words during the engagement but largely stayed apart.

From March 31, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will no longer use their HRH styles as they pursue a new life of personal and financial freedom, mostly in North America.

Kate Middleton Meets Ireland's Most Important Dog in All Green

Despite all the supposed royal chaos, Prince William and Kate Middleton are still maintaining a regular schedule of royal engagement and tours. Though, their latest international trip is a mere three-day jaunt across the sea to Ireland, it’s historic for a few reasons. For one, it’s the first official trip they’ve taken to the country as a couple. For another, they also met Ireland’s most important dog.

As one of their first duties on the tour, William and Kate met with Irish President Michael D. Higgins. This might have been a relatively boring photo op if it weren’t for the fact that Higgins is a fascinating character. Re-elected in the biggest landslide in Irish history, Higgins is a longtime left-wing politician who also happens to be a published poet and has been compared to Danny DeVito by the Internet. He also happens to have two very good Bernese mountain dogs, Bród and Síoda (that’s Irish for Pride and Silk) who frequently join him on official business.

The meeting with William and Kate was rightfully included on the dogs’ official itinerary. (Síoda, however, was reportedly resting at home with a paw injury, but Bród is known for being the biggest ham in front of the cameras).

Appropriately for the Dublin location, Kate showed up in a green separates Alessandra Rich outfit, which she paired with a darker green coat from Catherine Walker.

Thought Kate looked fittingly chic, it was Bród who took center stage for the official group portrait. He was, naturally, rewarded with pets.

The dog also joined the group for the ceremonial ringing of the Peace Bell.

Though, eventually, Bród decided he had other things to attend to.

The meeting was not all pets and bell ringing. It was also Kate and William’s first international trip since the United Kingdom officially left the European Union. The choice of Ireland was not at all insignificant in light of Brexit. While Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom (and hence is no longer part of the EU), the Republic of Ireland is its own independent country and remains part of the EU. The questions of how to deal with the Irish border was a significant sticking point during Brexit negotiations. Though Brexit was apparently discussed, the meeting was mostly symbolic. Not only are Kate and William royals, but the office of Ireland’s president is seen as mostly ceremonial as well.
