Family hold up messages of love to grandmother, 84, through window

Heart-warming moment family hold up messages of love and support to their 84-year-old grandmother through her care home window while they stick to strict coronavirus lockdown measures

  • Joyce Giles suffers from Alzheimer’s and lives in a Manchester care home
  • The at-risk 84-year-old grandmother has not been visited for two weeks
  • Daughter Joanne Madden and her family pulled Love Actually-inspired stunt, holding handmade signs of love up to Joyce’s window
  • The heartwarming video has gone viral during the coronavirus lockdown
  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

This is the heartwarming moment a family pulled a Love Actually-inspired stunt at their grandmother’s care home during the coronavirus lockdown.

Joyce Giles, 84, is usually visited by Joanne Madden, 49, and her family a few times at week at her care home in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

But last weekend, they figured out a way to show their love for Joyce – classed as at-risk of death from Covid-19 – while adhering to social distancing rules.

Staff at Meadow Bank care home, which has been closed to visitors for two weeks, recoded the touching moment the family flipped through an adorable hand-written message book at Joyce’s window before giving her gifts.

When the Love Actually-inspired stunt was posted online it quickly went viral, and has racked more more than two million views so far.

Critical care nurse Joanne said: ‘My mum has had Alzheimer’s for a few years now and I usually see her three or four times a week.

‘Her home was on lockdown for two weeks before the whole country was, so we’d not been able to see her.

But last weekend, they figured out a way to show their love for Joyce – classed as at-risk of death from Covid-19 – while adhering to social distancing rules

‘Mum’s quite big on contact and gives us kisses and cuddles and it broke my heart that we couldn’t figure out a way to get through to her.

‘My husband Dave and I were having a chat the night before and we decided to write out these messages and show them like they did in the film Love Actually.

‘It was all a bit of a last minute thing – we went down to the care home and pressed the bell, stepping back to keep our distance, and explained what we wanted to do.

‘She was having her lunch and they brought her through to the window and had it slightly open because she’s deaf in one ear.

‘She said “come in!” which we couldn’t do but the staff managed to sit her down.

‘She was puzzled at first but then started laughing so I know she did get it, and she was blowing kisses – she’s very animated.

‘When she stood up and went to the window she was getting emotional but she then turned around and acted silly when we showed her the gifts of toilet roll and a zebra plant pot – we know she likes daft things!

‘She was happy to see us – she’s proper grandma material and absolutely loves the bones off my son and daughter.’

Joyce, 84, has been suffering from Alzheimer’s for several years and lives at a care home

When the Love Actually-inspired stunt was posted online it quickly went viral, and has racked more more than two million views so far

Critical care nurse Joanne said: ‘My mum has had Alzheimer’s for a few years now and I usually see her three or four times a week’

‘Her home was on lockdown for two weeks before the whole country was, so we’d not been able to see her,’ Joanne added

A member of staff at the care home posted the heart warming video on Facebook to give staff a boost and families ideas on how to keep in touch with their loved ones.

Now the whole country is on lockdown, Joanne will be unable to visit her mum through the window as she has returned to her role in the NHS.

Her daughter Tayla, 22, is currently working in critical care with Covid-19 positive patients as a health care worker, so the family are now stepping back to protect their family members with the recent lockdown rules.

Joanne added: ‘It’s been really hard as it was the one year anniversary of my brother Craig’s death on March 20 and all I wanted was a big cuddle from my mum.

‘I’m petrified and feel sick to my stomach about going back to work and we can’t make the mistake of affecting mum with this.

‘We’re still writing letters to my mum because technology is a no-no for her, and to see that she’s all healthy looking was a weight off my shoulders.

‘We’re really looking forward to being able to see her again soon.’

Coronavirus pandemic drives up price of heroin, meth and fentanyl

The coronavirus pandemic is driving up the price of heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl as Mexican cartels scramble to get their hands on Chinese-manufactured chemicals now in short supply.

“The cartels are having a lot of difficulty producing drugs right now, and when the supply is low the price always goes up,” a US federal law enforcement source told The Post. “China has pretty much stopped production on the chemicals they need to do business.”

The pandemic has led to a shortage of workers at labs in China which produces more than 80 percent of precursor chemicals such as benzylfentanyl, norfentanyl and 4-anilinopiperidine used by the cartels to manufacture synthetic opioids such as heroin and fentanyl.

The bulk of the meth and synthetic opioids clandestinely produced in Mexico is controlled by the Sinaloa Cartel and its rival, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s latest National Drug Threat Assessment.

Most of the drugs are smuggled through the US southern border with Mexico, where authorities fear that the pandemic may result in a shortage of federal agents on both sides.

“It is the perfect avenue right now for cartels, with policing cut way back,” said the source.

Earlier this month, Customs and Border Patrol agents seized nearly 700 pounds of meth at the Arizona/Mexican border in Nogales — the largest seizure of the drug in the region’s history.

  • Depp has subpoenaed billionaire Musk for his text messages as part of a $50 million defamation case against Heard

Amber Heard is seen cuddling up to Elon Musk in the private elevator to Johnny Depp’s penthouse in exclusive new images that will drag the Tesla mogul deeper into the couple’s explosive legal battle.

Musk insists the 33-year-old actress had already split from Depp by the time they began seeing one another and their relationship didn’t become romantic ‘until some time later’.

However the Pirates of the Caribbean star accuses the pair of starting an affair one month into his 2015 marriage and has subpoenaed the billionaire for his text messages as part of a $50 million defamation case against Heard.

Now, surveillance camera images obtained by DailyMail.com capture his ex-wife cozying up to Musk as they ride the elevator at the luxury downtown LA apartment complex where she once lived with Depp.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star accuses the pair of starting an affair one month into his 2015 marriage and has subpoenaed the billionaire for his text messages as part of a $50 million defamation case against Heard

The Space X inventor, 48, can been seen in one image draping his arms around Heard, who appears to be wearing just a swimsuit and what appears to be a towel.

She reciprocates the affection by bending over to place her hands on the leg or waist of Musk, who is in a dark T-shirt and pants or jeans.

There are no timestamps or clues as to when the pictures were taken however security guards have previously gone on record to state that Musk visited Heard on multiple occasions before and after she filed for divorce in May 2016.

Depp, 55, moved out of the Eastern Columbia Building a month after the split but Heard carried on living there until December 2016, DailyMail.com understands.

The Oscar-nominated actor owned five penthouses at the up-scale address, all accessed by the private elevator seen in the images, but later sold them for a combined $10.88 million.

He and Heard agreed to a $7 million divorce settlement in August 2016 and seemed to have put their acrimonious divorce behind them until she penned an op-ed for the Washington Post detailing her experiences as a domestic violence survivor.

The article did not mention Depp by name but he filed for defamation last March, saying it led to speculation that he was the abuser and caused him to lose the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.

His legal action further accused Heard of ‘spending time in a new relationship’ with Musk almost immediately after their wedding in February 2015.

‘Only one calendar month after Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard were married – while Mr. Depp was out of the country, filming in March 2015 – Eastern Columbia Building personnel testified that Ms. Heard received Musk ”late at night” at Mr. Depp’s penthouse,’ the suit alleges.

‘Specifically, Ms. Heard asked staff at the Eastern Columbia Building to give her ”friend Elon” access to the building’s parking garage and the penthouse elevator ”late at night,” and they testified that they did so.

‘Building staff would then see Ms. Heard’s ”friend Elon” leaving the building the next morning.’

Depp doubled down by subpoenaing Musk for any texts, emails, letters or communications he exchanged with Heard during their marriage or anything mentioning alleged incidents of domestic violence.

He specifically wants to know what she told the tech tycoon about the May 21, 2016 blowout fight that resulted in Heard seeking a restraining order, accusing Depp of hurling a phone at her and beating her.

Depp has always argued that he was the victim of an ‘elaborate hoax’ instigated by his ex-wife, who ‘faked’ her injuries with makeup

Depp has always argued that he was the victim of an ‘elaborate hoax’ instigated by his ex-wife, who ‘faked’ her injuries with makeup.

Around two months after the break-up Heard was linked to Musk in tabloid reports suggesting they spent a weekend together in Miami.

The following April she was photographed holding hands with the dad-of-six, who divorced Westworld actress Talulah Riley in January 2015.

However the relationship was on and off until the couple finally called it quits in 2018.

Heard’s lawyers have previously described Depp’s allegation of infidelity as ‘frivolous’ and an attempt to ‘silence’ the Aquaman actress.

Sources close to Musk described it as ‘irrelevant nonsense’ and declined to comment beyond reiterating a statement issued by the entrepreneur’s rep last March.

‘Elon and Amber didn’t start seeing each other until May 2016, and even then it was infrequent,’ Musk’s spokesman said. ‘Their relationship didn’t become romantic until some time later.’

‘Elon and Amber didn’t start seeing each other until May 2016, and even then it was infrequent,’ Musk’s spokesman said. ‘Their relationship didn’t become romantic until some time later’

Musk made a further cameo last week in London’s High Court where Depp is also suing News Group Newspapers over a 2018 article in The Sun newspaper that described him as ‘wife beater’.

The court was read a text message from Depp to a friend that made an apparent reference to Musk: ‘Brother, I’m sorry to even ask but she sucked mollusc’s crooked d*** and he gave her some sh**y lawyers.

‘I have no mercy left of what I thought was love for this gold-digging, low level, dime-a-dozen mushy, pointless, flappy fish market.’

Actor James Franco is another A-lister caught up in the ex-couple’s legal war after he was pictured riding the same elevator with Heard on May, 22, 2016, the night after her infamous dust-up with Depp.

Heard’s legal team said Franco once lived in the same apartment complex and was simply taking the elevator at the same time.

But Depp’s lawyers hit him with a subpoena last July and want to grill him over what the pair discussed and whether she had any visible bruises.

Depp and Heard met on the set of The Rum Diary, back in 2011, married four years later – then split in a little over a year amid a slew of blood curdling domestic violence allegations and tabloid headlines.

Heard wrote in her December 2018 op-ed: ‘I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.’

That prompted Depp to file for defamation in Virginia, where the Washington Post is based, stating: ‘Ms. Heard is not a victim of domestic abuse; she is a perpetrator.’

Heard responded with a 300-page filing of her own, cataloging the years of alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of ‘the monster’. The case is due to be heard in August.

‘Elon Musk and Amber Heard seem not to know that Mr. Depp’s penthouse elevator button that says ‘M’ does not take you to Mars,’ Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman said of our exclusive pictures.

‘Musk – aka Penthouse Guy – has publicly denied sneaking up to see Ms Heard a month after her marriage to Johnny but that will soon be put to the test, as will her entire abuse hoax.

‘As the evidence mounts up, who was where, and knew what, when?’

Shoppers line up with proper coronavirus 'social distancing' as they queue around car parks to get into supermarkets

BRITS are finally taking notice of the government's strict coronavirus guidelines while queuing outside besieged supermarkets.

Photos – taken outside stores across the UK – show shoppers following 'social distancing'  rules as they stand two-metres apart before loading up their trollies.

⚠️ Read our coronavirus live blog for the latest news & updates

The pictures are a far cry from the scenes witnessed at mobbed stores before the government introduced its lockdown rules.

Stores across the country were rocked by violence and chaos as selfish shoppers stripped shelves bare and fought over toilet rolls.

Panic buyers formed scrums outside supermarkets and queues a 1,000 strong snaked through car parks and onto main roads.

The PM is allowing people out to buy vital necessities such as food or collect medication, although he wants them to go “as infrequently as possible”.

And some supermarket chains have already revealed they will be doing their bit to ensure people play it safe.

Waitrose is to begin to limit customer numbers on a branch-by-branch basis.

“Shop managers will use their judgment on customer numbers and when the shop is at capacity to manage social distancing will operate a one in, one out policy,” it said.

The supermarket is also using “marshals” to help manage queues outside shops and if necessary remind customers to respect the government’s rules.

Outside stores there will be signage and a coned area instructing customers to queue, keeping their distance from each other.

Sainsbury’s has already said it will also be limiting customer numbers and erecting barriers outside stores and Morrisons is doing similar.

On Wednesday photos emerged showing mobs ignoring the guidelines by standing too close to each other as they queued outside packed stores.

Hundreds of people appeared to ignore the Government guidelines as they queued outside the Asda supermarket in Linwood, Scotland, at 7.50am.

Hoarding shoppers were also seen snaking around an Asda car park waiting in a queue for two hours before the supermarket opened – and one said it was like a “war.”

More than 200 crazed customers wanting to stockpile ahead of a coronavirus lockdown started queuing at 5am in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs.

Other shoppers who arrived for the opening time then had to wait until nearly 9am before they could get in because of the rush.

One said: “People at the front were swearing at each other as they jostled for positions.

“Tempers were beginning to fray and the doors were still shut. It was shocking.

“There were people waiting with trolleys as far as the eye could see. I counted at least 200, but there was more. It was madness.”

Madonna comes up with bizarre fried fish song as she self-isolates

Coronavirus self-isolation can be tough at the best of times, but it seems Madonna is getting a bit of cabin fever as she made up a song about fried fish to kill the time.

The legendary entertainer remixed her hit song Vogue as she told fans that she had run out of pasta and was now cracking on with the fried fish.

She shared the video on Twitter, telling her fans: ‘Living in Special Times…………thank GOD for imagination and fried fish! #quarantine#covid_19#staysafe#becreative’.

Madonna danced around her bathroom singing into a hairbrush: ‘Come on, go. Let’s go eat some fried fish. Fried fish!

‘Come on, Vogue – I mean go. Let’s go eat some fried fish, fried fish! Cos there’s no more pasta, oh no.

‘So we’re gonna eat some fried fish, fried fish yeah!’

Madonna isn’t the only one who’s already struggling with being cooped up in the house, as Sam Smith also shared the stages of a ‘quarantine meltdown’ with their fans.

They shared images of them getting progressively more distraught at being stuck in the house, as the UK slowly headed towards lockdown.

Harry Styles, meanwhile, has been using his time in self-isolation to learn Italian and sign language as well as to do face masks and hang out with the friends he has been in quarantine with.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, people have been advised to stay indoors and avoid all unnecessary trips and gatherings in order to slow the spread of the virus.

The public have also been sharing how they’re working from home and what they’re doing to alleviate the boredom as they self-isolate to protect themselves and others.

While younger people have a greater chance of recovery from Covid-19, the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are most at risk of complication from the illness.

Boris Johnson urges up to 65,000 ex-medics to help fight coronavirus

Your NHS needs YOU! Boris Johnson urges up to 65,000 former medics to come out of retirement to help fight coronavirus

  • Ex-doctors and nurses are being urged by ministers to help tackle coronavirus
  • Emails will echo Lord Kitchener’s Your Country Needs You recruitment poster
  • Staff will complete brief online survey and be allowed to re-register immediately
  • NHS officials not yet put figure on number of ex-workers they expect to return
  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

Up to 65,000 ex-doctors and nurses are being told ‘your NHS needs you’ to fight the biggest health crisis in more than a century.

Anyone who quit or retired in the past three years is being urged by ministers to return to help tackle coronavirus.

Emails, which will go out this morning, echo Lord Kitchener’s Your Country Needs You recruitment poster from the First World War. Staff will be allowed to re-register immediately with either the General Medical Council, the doctors’ professional watchdog, or the Nursing and Midwifery Council, its equivalent for nurses.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson holds his fourth daily press conference amid the coronavirus outbreak. Ministers are urging ex-doctors and nurses to return and help tackle the virus

They will complete a brief online survey on their experience and skills and be offered roles in hospitals, GP surgeries, social care services and the NHS 111 helpline.

Several hotel chains are in talks with the Government about offering up extra bed space to help hospitals. They include Best Western, which has 270 properties across the UK and has already promised to give up 15,000 bedrooms, 90 per cent of its total.

NHS officials have not put a figure on the number of former doctors and nurses they expect to bring back but last week, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he hoped to ‘get our hands on as many as possible’.

All returning staff will be paid fully according to the amount of time they can work and will be given brief training and induction. The NHS is also allowing some of the most experienced trainee doctors and nurses to join the front line.

Those in the final year of their degrees will be allowed to take up paid roles without having to pass their final set of exams.

Mr Hancock said: ‘To further boost the ranks of our NHS, we are now turning to people who have recently left the healthcare professions who can bring their experience and expertise to our health system.

Left: Lord Kitchener’s Your Country Needs You recruitment poster from the First World War and right: The Mail imagines how Boris Johnson’s appeal to doctors and nurses might look

‘They can play a crucial role in maximising our capacity to fight this outbreak – and wherever they can help, they will be hugely welcomed. This continues to be a huge national effort to protect lives and protect our NHS, and I urge everyone to continue following the latest medical advice.’

Yesterday, the UK’s death toll rose to 144, an increase of 40 – or 38 per cent – in 24 hours. The number of confirmed cases increased to 3,229, up by nearly a quarter.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is sending emails today to 50,000 nurses whose registration has lapsed in the past three years, while the General Medical Council will do the same for 15,500 doctors.

Professor Stephen Powis, NHS national medical director, said: ‘By offering to return to the NHS now, these thousands of well qualified and compassionate people will make more of a difference than ever before – not just to patients, but to colleagues and the wider community.’

Ruth May, chief nursing officer for England, said: ‘As the health service gears up to deal with the greatest global health threat in its history, my message to former colleagues is: Your NHS Needs You.’ The Government hopes to sign up thousands of the public as NHS volunteers to help fetch medicines, feed patients and carry out admin.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty warned last night that London hospitals would soon be under severe pressure as measures such as social distancing and school closures intended ‘to pull down the peak’ of cases would take time to have an effect. ‘Even if everybody does all the things we hope they will do, the numbers will continue to go up over the next two weeks,’ he said.

EastEnders fans up in arms as Queen Vic welcomes punters on St Patrick’s Day – despite government advice to avoid pubs – The Sun

EASTENDERS fans were left shocked last night as the Queen Vic carried on as normal and celebrated St Patrick’s Day – despite the real world being on lockdown.

While Boris Johnson has warned the country to avoid pubs in an attempt to contain coronavirus – in Walford it’s clearly business as usual.

⚠️ Read our coronavirus live blog for the latest news & updates

The soap is yet to mention the pandemic despite usually addressing real life events and those watching at home are not impressed.

During last night’s episode landlord Mick (Danny Dyer) was seen welcoming punters for a pint of Guinness in the pub, which he had decorated with bunting and leprechauns.

The boozer was full of people in green outfits enjoying the festivities, while the rest of the country is sat at home on the sofa.

Taking to Twitter to discuss it, one person wrote: “The #QueenVic seems very busy this evening ….. should I tell them, or will someone else? #EastEnders #SocialDistancing.”

A second added: “I see no one at the Queen Vic’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations is following government coronavirus guidelines to avoid pubs… in fact very little social distancing going on at all in Walford #EastEnders.”

While a third wrote: “Queen Vic must be the only pub in the country celebrating St Patrick's day! #EastEnders.”

The soap’s continuation with no mention of coronavirus comes as a baby and nine-month-old boy have been diagnosed with coronavirus as the killer bug continues to sweep the UK.

In the UK, coronavirus has killed 71 people while a total of 1,950 have been struck down with the illness.
