He is also left devastated by the death of Justin Foley due to complications from AIDS.
While the show's boss has insisted the fourth season is the last, Dylan has thought of a storyline for a fifth season, with Clay quarantining in Evergreen County with his parents while being visited by the ghosts of Justin and his best friend Hannah.
He joked to Variety: "It’s all set in one room. Damn, actually we should have done this.”
Dylan also discussed Clay's therapy scenes in season four, and revealed he had pushed for them since season one.
He explained: "I remember speaking to Brian Yorkey, the showrunner, over the course of the first few seasons, saying that I really want Clay to be in therapy in season four because I want to take a deep dive into what’s actually going on in Clay’s mind.
"We’ve seen him have these struggles since the beginning of the show, and I wanted to face that headfirst."
Commenting on the show's final ever episode, Dylan continued: "You don’t see Clay fully recovered.
"You see him come to terms with what he’s struggling with — being able to say it in front of an entire school at graduation and be able to own it – and have an optimistic outlook on life… but you don’t see him recover."
13 Reasons Why certainly hasn’t been without it’s controversies since it burst onto television screens in March 2017.
The first season in particular was criticised for the graphic scenes involving sexual assault and suicide.
Therefore, each episode is prefaced by a public service announcement directing viewers to resources for suicide prevention, drug abuse and addiction and school violence, among others.
"I think that there’s no opinion on the series that is wrong. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, in the way that they perceive it," Dylan said of the varying reactions.
13 Reasons Why seasons 1-4 are available now on Netflix.
