Peaky Blinders season six has begun to be teased by the creators of the hit BBC series ahead of its return. However, one thing it seems like won’t happen is Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) finding love once again. The show creator and writer Steven Knight revealed all about this in a recent interview about the series.

Why will Tommy Shelby never find love again?

Tommy Shelby has certainly been through dome rough times on Peaky Blinders after returning from war just before season one.

Add into this the death of his brother John Shelby (Joe Cole) and his wife Grace Shelby (Annabelle Wallis), there’s certainly been a lot for him to deal with.

However, now the creator of the show has revealed it does not look like life will be getting any easier for him as the series continues into season six.

Speaking recently during a special screening of the season five finale for Esquire, he told fans about why Tommy will never be able to find love.

Delving into the character’s psyche, Knight revealed how his vision for the role was how Tommy will have contemplated suicide before the show even began.

Then deciding not to kill himself meant for him he was no longer afraid of dying.

He said: “He just knows he’s free because he’s confronted death to that extent.

“And that’s what I think makes him vulnerable because he does have that torment inside that he has to suppress and in order to suppress it, he has to not feel certain things.

“When Grace came along, deliberately named Grace, he had to open some of those locked doors, let some of those things out.

“And it was tempting to give him that sort of happiness with Grace but I just think if he ever finds contentment then the thing that makes him extraordinary will probably go away.

“So I didn’t want to give him that. I feel I know him so well and all the family so well.

“But it just felt for him to continue on the road that he’s on, he needed that avenue to contentment to be gone.”

This also means it seems Tommy will not find this level of contentment with his new wife Lizzie Shelby (Natasha O’Keeffe) either.

In season five of Peaky Blinders, it was revealed Tommy had married Lizzie after she gave birth to his daughter.

However, the pair went through some marital issues stemming from the fact their relationship will never be like his with Grace.

Heading into season six of the show, this could be something which will be explored more.

So far not too much has been revealed about what will happen other than there will be a time jump to 1934.

There have also been some casting announcements with Stephen Graham confirming he was joining the show.

As well as this, in a recent interview with Digital Spy, director Anthony Byrne revealed there would be a “dark” new female character in the series.

He said: “There’s a great female character who is new, who is pretty dark.

“It’s similar to [Oswald] Mosley… she has a similar ideology, and that’s challenging for any character, like I’ve said before… he or she.

“They don’t have guns or a gang, but they have an ideology that’s like a virus and it’s more dangerous than anything.

“She’s a great character and we’re really close to casting her, as well.”

Peaky Blinders seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix now.
