NYC school closings – are ALL schools closed in New York due to coronavirus? – The Sun

NEW York is one of the most coronavirus afflicted areas in the United States with schools closing left, right and center.

Here is what we know about the effect the killer bug is having on education.

Are all schools closed in New York?

New York City operates the largest public school system in the US, teaching more than one million students.

Astonishingly, all are either closed or in the process of closing.

Several dozen buildings will be used as “learning centers” for children of essential city workers like doctors, nurses, paramedics and cleaners.

Meanwhile most private institutions have already shut.

How long will public schools be closed for?

By Monday, March 23,  all schools will have shut.

Schools will be closed until at least April 20, but could stay closed until further notice.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said the radical move was vital because "our city is facing an unprecedented threat, and we must respond with a wartime mentality".

Will kids be able to learn at home?

By Monday, March 23 the mayor hopes to have launched a remote learning service so students can keep up with their education.

The city said it is currently “working on providing technology and connectivity to all students.” This could include the provision of laptops or tablets if the student doesn't own one and help with internet connections.

When else have schools closed in NY?

Schools will usually shut if snowfall means they cannot safely travel.

But there has never been such a prolonged closure since the 1918-1920   Spanish Flu which killed 674,000 Americans.
